Salvinorin is a hallucinogenic compound with psychedelic/dissociative effects found in Salvia divinorum, a Mexican plant with a long history of use as an entheogen by indigenous Mazatec shamans. A trans-neoclerodane diterpenoid, salvinorin acts as a kappa opioid receptor agonist and is the first known compound acting on this receptor that is not an alkyloid as it does not contain nitrogen in its structure. |
