Neurogenins are a family of bHLH transcription factors involved in specifying neuronal differentiation. They are related to Drosophila atonal. Neurogenin-2 is essential for the development of the dentate gyrus, a region of the hippocampus which is involved in learning and memory. Neurogenin-2 mutant mice have fewer DG progenitors and these cells present defects in neuronal differentiation. |
