The cobra is one of the world's most poisonous snakes and is indigenous to the countries of Asia and Oceania. Snake venom is a complex mixture of proteins and peptides. Venom proteomic profiles from Naja naja atra (Chinese cobra) contains over 120 proteins and peptides. Functional analysis based upon toxin categories reveals that cobra venom has a high abundance of cardio- and neurotoxins. Enzymes from cobra venom show promise in the treatment and/or prevention of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. |
